The performances of the two Hong Kong Lunar New Year films, the Dayo Wong Tze Wah and Sammi Cheng Sau Man starred Lunar New Year movie NIGHT KING (YEH WONG) and the Edan Lui Cheuk On and Elaine Jin (Kam Yin Ling) starred THE SNOWBALL ON A SUNNY DAY (GUM DOR BO), have caught attention. According to the Hong Kong Box Office Co. Ltd.'s announcement yesterday, the 2026 Hong Kong and Macau Lunar New Year slot from the Lunar New Year's Eve to the Lunar 3rd (16th to 19th)'s four day box office reached a total of HK$ 39.718 million, an increase of 52.8% from the HK$ 25.987 million in same period last year. The main reason was that this year the Lunar New Year films have been big hits, along with ideal traffic and spending atmosphere the box office performance was driven to improve.
As for the Lunar New Year box office, NIGHT KING and THE SNOWBALL ON A SUNNY DAY took the top two spots. The former's first 4 days in release accumulated HK$ 26.735 million on top, while SNOWBALL with 4.765 million ranked second. In third place was BLADES OF THE GUARDIANS (BIU YUN: FUNG HEI DAI MOK) with a box office of 2.586 million. BACK TO THE PAST (CHUM CHUN GEI) and the Hollywood animation GOAT came in fourth and fifth respectively with 2.111 million and 1.425 million.
The film company announced that NIGHT KING has exceeded HK$30 million at the cumulative box office as of 1 o'clock yesterday since its release in Hong Kong and Macau on Lunar New Year's Day, and the news brought excitement to the team. NIGHT KING not only set a new record for the Hong Kong Lunar New Year film opening, the single day box office, Wong Tze Wah's personal best opening and its 900 shows on opening day that set a new high in the past 10 years; but also set new records around the world. The film's 4 days box office in Malaysia is near 3 million MR (around HK$ 6 million). The film was released in the United States and Canada yesterday, sweeping more than 120 theaters in North America and setting a new record for Hong Kong Lunar New Year films in North America. The film was officially released in United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands and other European regions yesterday, and many advanced screenings in the UK were sold out.
