The action actor and action director of a generation
Mang Hoi (originally named Mang King Hoi) passed away on the 9th at
age 65. Mang Hoi's niece Mang Hei Lun confirmed the news with the
media, citing that her uncle was diagnosed with esophageal cancer last
year. Despite treatment his condition did not improve. His wife and
17 year old daughter have been by his side. Mang Hoi had a lot of
connections in life. His elder and junior colleagues, artist friends
and the Stuntman Association have all visited him and helped out. His
younger brother Mang Lung would assist with the funeral.
Mang Hoi had an unbreakable connection with kung fu action
films in his life and made many contributions. Mang Hoi started in an
opera troupe. At age 7 at his mother's suggestion he went to the Chun
Chau Opera School to study Beijing Opera with Master Fun Kuk Fa,
fellow disciples included Connie Chan Bo Chu, Josephine Siao Fong
Fong, Lam Ching Ying, Stephen Tung Wai and others. He was also one
of the master's favorite disciples.
Mang Hoi at age 10 as a child star participated in the film
THE VAGABOND SWORDSMAN (FUNG CHUN HAK) and got into the business.
Later he served as a stunt double and stuntman, then promoted to action
director. At age 18 Bruce Lee named him to perform in FIST OF UNICORN
(KEI LUN JEUNG) and served as a martial art consultant. Later he
performed in ENTER THE DRAGON. Bruce Lee stipulated that he wanted a
close up shot of him and even asked him to help on the set. Mang Hoi
years later worked with Bruce Lee's son Brandon Lee Kwok Ho in the film
LEGACY OF RAGE, one of the rare artists who worked with both Bruce Lee
and his son. During the vampire film fever, Mang Hoi and his elder
colleague Lam Ching Ying in the vampire film series constantly became
the best partners. Their funny scenes left viewers with a deep
impression.
Mang Hoi made a name as a stuntman and action actor, later
he was also promoted to action director. Films he starred in included
HEART OF THE DRAGON, ZU: THE SWORDSMAN OF THE MAGIC MOUNTAIN,
ENCOUNTER OF THE SPOOKY KIND II, IP MAN: THE FINAL BATTLE. In
particular for the Michelle Yeoh (Yeung Chi King) starred film YES!
MADAM, Mang Hoi won the 5th Hong Kong Film Awards "Best Supporting
Actor". During the film production, he even set off romantic spark
with his co-star Cynthia Rothrock and had a relationship for over
5 years. However Mang Hoi had no intention to try his luck overseas,
finally he wed his outside the business girlfriend and had a daughter
who is 17 year old this year. Mang Hoi not only won the 5th Hong Kong
Film Awards Best Supporting Actor, but also won the Hong Kong Film
Awards Best Action Choreography. Mang Hoi's final film was the
Donnie Yen Chi Tan starred KUNG FU JUNGLE (YUT GOR YUN DIK MO LUM), in
which he guest starred as a mob boss in prison. The last film Mang
Hoi worked on in Hong Kong was before the pandemic, with Philip Keung
Ho Man and Fish Liew Chi Yu in REMEMBER WHAT I FORGOT (CHUN GAING YUNG
YAU). He played a security guard.
Once dated Mang Hoi, Cynthia Rothrock remembered Mang Hoi on
social media. "This is very sad news. My good friend and THE BLONDE
FURY director just passed away. Rest in peace Mang Hoi. Yesterday he
just talked about him in an interview."
