Famous director Ann Hui On Wa has once six Hong Kong Film Award Best Director, with ORDINARY HEROES (CHIN YIN MAN YU), A SIMPLE LIFE (TOH JEH) and THE GOLDEN ERA (WONG GUM SI DOI) won the Golden Horse Best Director three times. Two years ago she even received the 77th Venice Film Festival Lifetime Achievement Award.
The 59th Golden Horse Award ceremony would take place on November 19th. The Golden Horse executive committee yesterday announced that the jury chair would be Ann Hui On Wa. She would lead Golden Horse Best Actor Chang Chen, Best Actress Gwei Lun-Mei, director Cheng Wei-hao, producer Yeh Ju-fen and Ellen Loo's wife Yu Jing-Pin and others on the jury. According to the Taiwan media, Hui On Wa agreed right on the spot when invited. She was not only happy to be able to work with everyone at Golden Horse, but also said, "For the rest of my life, with the greatest, may I continue to be of service to film." In addition, STILL HUMAN (LUN LOK YUN)'s Hong Kong director Oliver Chan Siu Guen would also be on the jury for the first round of the narrative short film category.
The Hong Kong Motion Pictures Industry Association last month wrote to its members, citing that in recent years the Golden Horse Award has gradually become more political as many Taiwan directors or artists "mixed politics and film together", "sullied film's artistic independence" and urged participating members to "think thrice to avoid getting caught in the crossfire". This would not be the first time Hui On Wa would serve as the Golden Horse Award jury chair. In the past 3 years this post has all gone to Taiwan filmmakers. In June 2019, the Golden Horse executive committee announced that Hong Kong director Johnnie To Kei Fung would serve as the 56th Golden Horse Award jury chair; in September of the same year, To Kei Fung due to film production company contract restricts resigned. At the time the executive committee chair Ang Lee said that he was able to understand and IF I WERE FOR REAL's Taiwan director Wang Toon took over the task.
