The two time Golden Horse Award Best Actor Peter Yang Kwan passed away in Los Angeles, U.S. at age 88. Friends of the Yeung family confirmed that Yeung Kwan has battled illness for over a year. In the past several months his prostate cancer has spread to his lungs. Finally around 2 AM on the 24th in the company of his wife Yu Fung Chi and their children, her passed away at his Cerritos home in Los Angeles County. Having won the 7th and the 11th Golden Horse Award Best Actor, he also starred in series like THE SHELL GAME, THE LEGEND OF WONDER LADY, BEHIND SILK CURTAINS. After 1990 he eased out of show business. Yeung Kwan's professionalism also won respect and admiration from Golden Horse Award Best Actress Gua Ah-Lei and Best Actor Simon Yam Tat Wa.
Yeung Kwan was originally Yeung Pang Gui, one of the Hong Kong Shaw Film Studio's elders. At age 15 he joined the film industry, in 1954 he starred in hs first film BLOOD-STAINED FLOWERS. In 1963 with THE STORY OF QIN XIANG-LIN as the cold hearted royal consort Chen Sai Mei he truly caught attentions. He also starred in famous movies like MANY ENCHATING NIGHTS and LADY IN THE TOWER. In the 1968 film STORM OVER THE YANG-TSE RIVER he played the special agent "Changjiang number 1"and won the 7th Golden Horse Award Best Actor. In 1973 with the film THE ESCAPE he again won the 11th Golden Horse Award Best Actor. He was also the first Golden Horse Award Best Actor who won with a kung fu film.
Yeung Kwan and his wife Florence Yu Fung Chi in 1970 formed the Hong Kong Fong Ming Motion Picture Company and participated as a producer and a director. His film YOU CAN'T TELL HIM won the 9th Golden Horse Awards like Best Narrative Film; THE ESCAPE won the 11th Golden Horse Award Best Narrative Film. According to friends of Yeung Kwan, Yeung Kwan's wife Yu Fung Chi once was a film producer and they have been married for over 60 years; their daughter recently returned from the U.S. to Hong Kong to visit her bed ridden father. The family was very saddened by his passing.
Yeung Kwan had countless work, including THE JILTED, WANG PAO CHUAN, MISTY RAIN. Among them his portrayal of the "Northern Con Man" Cheuk Yat Fu in the TVB series THE SHELL GAME also became one of the classic characters. Recently TVB also aired his series BEHIND SILK CURTAINS again.
Having worked together on the film YOU CAN'T TELL HIM, the 78 year old Golden Horse Award Best Actress Gua Ah-Lei yesterday heard the news of Yeung Kwan's passing and was very upset. Having lived in Los Angeles for over 20 years, Gua Ah-Lei said that before the pandemic she and Yeung Kwan often met up. In her impression Big Brother Yeung was in great spirits, friendly, happy, and during the pandemic they also often spoke over the phone.
"He was an actor I really worshipped." Gua Ah-Lei said that since YOU CAN'T TELL HIM they have worked together on television series many times. In her heart Yeung Kwan was a very professional actor. "He was very serious and stubborn about every scene." Gua Ah-Lei recalled that in one television series she played Yeung Kwan's concubine. In a passionate struggle scene, Kwan Yeung for realism fell to the ground and injured his ribs. After being treated at the hospital, he actually returned to continue taping.
Having worked with Yeung Kwan on THE SHELL GAME, Simon Yam Tat Wa praised this elder as humorous, glad to be close to his juniors. His acting was outstanding and absolutely Best Actor class. THE SHELL GAME star Liza Wang Ming Chuen also felt saddened by the news of Yeung Kwan's passing.
John Chiang Dai Wai said that he only found out that Yeung Kwan passed away from cancer from reading the newspaper. Several days ago he was still chatting with friends and spoke of TVB playing the series he starred in. He said that Yeung Kwan was his elder. He worked with Director Li Han-Hsiang in Taiwan and was his mother's generation. Did he have any memory of him? Brother John said, "He was great friends with Li Han-Hsiang and (Derek) Yee Tung Sing's Papa. He often came to my home for dinner, drinks and chats. At the time I was very little and didn't have much memory." When was the last time he saw Yeung Kwan? Brother John said, "I haven't seen him in a long time, after leaving Hong Kong Yeung Kwan went to the U.S. and we saw each other less."
