Sylvia Chang with A LIGHT NEVER GOES OUT (DUN FOR LAN SHAN) won the Golden Horse Award Best Actress. The film after a week in release in Hong Kong seemingly performed worse than expectation, as of April 21st its cumulative box office was HK$ 1,533,908. Entering its second week, its shows were drastically reduced as well. After director Anastasia Tsang Hin Ning issued a "to the death comment", producer Saville Chan Sum Yiu also posted a thousand word essay on social media to send up an "emergency flare" for the film.
A LIGHT NEVER GOES OUT has received good reviews but its box office has not proportionally benefit. Even Taiwan star Vivian Hsu spoke up, "I would recommend a movie to you, have you seen it yet?" Producer Chan Sum Yiu in the thousand word essay mentioned that the message has been scattered and made the promotion even more difficult. A LIGHT NEVER GOES OUT aside from the traditional marketing also held different special screenings, exhibits, photography landmarks and workshops, yet it was still very hard to be seen. Serious promotions were far outmatched by traffic stream ciphers that you can yell or laugh at. He understood that each person would have different experience from watching a film and have a choice in how to spend their money. He and the director, who studied cultural studies Tsang Hin Ning fell for the "Hong Kong neon light" subject, and made A LIGHT NEVER GOES OUT in hopes that through Hong Kong film it would bring even more cultural influence and discussions. Whether the review has been good or bad, they still would gladly listen. He mentioned that the reason behind this adventure to save the light and the shadow with the light and the shadow. "A LIGHT NEVER GOES OUT may very likely the last film that could have neon lights as its subject in Hong Kong film history, because almost all the neon lights on the streets have been remove and would not likely return."
