[2009.12.29] AVATAR REIGNS AT THE CHRISTMAS BOX OFFICE

The Christmas holiday has passed. This year's Christmas film competition was rather fierce. Although Chinese films were not weak with the assistance of big productions BODYGUARDS AND ASSASSINS (SUP YUET WAI SING) and STORM WARRIORS (FUNG WON 2), ultimately they were no match for TITANIC director James Cameron's AVATAR. After 11 days in release AVATAR made 48 million at the box office and left its competition in the dust. The Peter Chan Ho Sun produced BODYGUARDS AND ASSASSINS gathered numerous Best Actors like Tony Leung Ka Fai, Donnie Yen Chi Tan and Eric Tsang Chi Wai. Its Mainland box office has already passed 100 million, but due to its genre it could not absorb the younger viewers during the holiday. Its Hong Kong performance was average. After 10 days its box office was 9.87 million.

Instead with the pretty cast THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON performed better than BODYGUARDS AND ASSASSINS. After 11 days its box office was 12.4 million. After 18 days STORM WARRIORS slipped at the box office with a cumulative box office of 15 million. SHERLOCK HOLMES after 4 days made 7 million, which was already considered ideal. Zhang Yimou's new film A SIMPLE NOODLE STORY was a big Mainland hit but after 4 days in Hong Kong it only made 420,000. This year's Christmas children film ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS 2 THE SQUEAKQUEL after 4 days made 2.33 million.
