The Emperor Motion Picture AS THE LIGHT GOES OUT (GAU FOR YING HUNG) will be released early next year. The film is based on the Hong Kong fire department. With the full assistance of the fire department the film was more realistic and convincing. In one scene close comrades Nicholas Tse Ting Fung and Shawn Yue Man Lok had a struggle over a rescue. With axes in hand they almost started a fight.
Ting Fung and Lok Jai in the film played a pair of close friends who drastically different personalities. In real life Ting Fung had two sons, but in the film Ting Fung had to stop the single father Lok Jai from rescuing his son.
In the scene they both held axes in their hands in the fire, with a glass door between them. Ting Fung felt that they should rescue those who were trapped around them first, but Lok Jai wanted to break down the door to look for his son. Earlier Lok Jai witnessed Ting Fung deliberately let Andy Tien (On Chi Kit) get into trouble and has already lost confidence in him. Lok Jai said, "With what happened today, how can I trust you?" Immediately a spark was ignited between them.
Ting Fung said that it was very hard to choose between the role of a firefighter and a father. Although he understood that the son came first, in the film he felt that the right choice was to take care of those in front of him before joining Lok Jai to find his son.
This scene was also very memorable for Lok Jai. He pointed out that although he and Ting Fung were close in age, because he had real life fatherhood experience the director deliberately switched their characters around for the contrasting effect.
Although this was "fiery", off camera the actors got along very pleasantly. Ting Fung, Lok Jai and William Chan Wai Ting would take turn playing with the production team's boom mic on their breaks. Once in their hands they realized that actually sound recording was not easy at all. The boom mic was not only very heavy but also had to be balanced. However the trio claimed that it was like lifting weights. It was absolutely a great way to get big.
