The Hong Kong Film Awards yesterday announced its nominations. Music group MIRROR's members Edan Lui Cheuk On and Jer Lau Ying Ting would vie for Best New Performer. Edan was even nominated for two films. On the other hand, Jer's co-star and popularity king Keung To was not nominated for Best New Performer, only with his theme song for Best Original Film Song. As for Best Actress, Sylvia Chang and Angela Yuen Lai Lam already competed against each other at the Golden Horse Awards would resume the competition on a different field of battle.

To be revealed on April 16th, the 41st Hong Kong Film Awards yesterday held a press conference at the Cultural Center in Tsim Sha Tsui and announced the nominations! Hong Kong Film Awards Association president Derek Yee Tung Sing, actors Louise Wong Dan Nei, Tony Wu Tsz Tung, Lo Chun Yip, Chan Kin Long and others attended. Past Hong Kong Film Awards Best Actor Sean Lau Ching Wan with DETECTIVE VS. SLEUTHS (SUN TAM DAI JIN) would compete for Best Actor against Louis Cheung Kai Chung, Mak Pui Tung, Yeung Wai Lun and others. The always low key Ching Wan simply responded, "Thank you everyone for your support!" Cheung Kai Chung said, "I sincerely thank every voter who voted for me, thank you Hong Kong Film Awards for me to be nominated with THE NARROW ROAD character. I am even happier than many friends and colleagues from the film are also nominated. During the shoot the feeling was like a older brother taking a group of young film lovers to go rafting at sea. During the process were terrifying tides and waves, we overcame a lot of hardship. Everyone had the belief, hoping that the film would be able to provide energy to the audience. I feel like sometimes it's just like our movie, no matter how narrow the road is, how small as dust we are, we just bite down hard and don't let go. Now we have proven that the boat won't capsize, I am very happy. I was very touched when I watched it live, not only because of the hard work being recognized but also even happier that all the young workers were nominated and recognized." He at the same time was nominated for Best Supporting Actor with TABLE FOR SIX (FAN HEI GUNG SUM). He praised the team for having love and joy, as he hoped to be able to walk the red carpet together then, but not like the human centipede!

Anthony Wong Chau Sun joked, "Of course I am very happy about the Best Actor nomination, as happy as a wedding banquet! However wedding banquet costs a lot of money, so there would lie the pressure!" Mak Pui Tung said, "What is happier than one person getting nominated? Two people getting nominated together, I am very happy to be nominated together with my good brother Ah Lun (Yeung Wai Lun)!" Yeung Wai Lun said, "I considered a life achievement unlocked! Thank you! Very wonderful! Very exciting!"

As for Sylvia Chang and Angela Yuen Lai Lam, they battled each other at the Golden Horse Awards last year. Finally Sylvia Chang with A LIGHT NEVER GOES OUT (DUN FOR LAN SHAN). This time returning to the "home field" Hong Kong Film Awards, Yuen Lai Lam against sniped at the elder along with good actors Louisa So Yuk Wa, Teresa Mo Shun Kwan and others. Speaking of the nomination, Sylvia Chang joked, "Hong Kong's neon lights are the real Best Actress of A LIGHT NEVER GOES OUT!" Yuen Lai Lam described her emotions as "extremely happy" and asked whether THE NARROW ROAD could stay at a cinema a little longer, while So Yuk Wa stated the nomination as incredible. "My heart is beating so fast!"

The competitions between Best Actor and Best Actress were obviously fierce, but the most talked about would be the battle royal at Best New Performer. Popular group MIRROR members Edan Lui Cheuk On with HONG KONG FAMILY (GOR SI GOR JIK) and CHILLI LAUGH STORY (HAP GA LAT) received two nominations, and with the Emperor Motion Picture MAMA'S AFFAIRS (AH MA YAU JOR DAI YI GOR) group mate Jer Lau Ying Ting was also nominated. MAMA's other male lead Keung To had a bigger role but was snubbed, only nominated for Best Original Film Song with the theme song RAIN OR SHINE (FUNG YU BUT GOI). Playing his father in the film, Law Wing Cheong did not have a lot of screen time but was surprisingly nominated for Best Supporting Actor!

Jer was excited about the nomination, "I am very happy to receive this year's Hong Kong Film Award Best New Performer nomination. Playing this character, I was able to work with Mo Shun Kwan, director Pang Sau Wai and a group of MAMA'S AFFAIR cast and crew. Thank you very much to the cast and the crew, from them I learned a lot. For a new actor it was the most valuable experience. Edan, Keung To and Sister Mo (Teresa Mo Shun Kwan) were all nominated, it would be like a big party. I am very happy! I have never attended the Hong Kong Film Awards as an actor, I really look forward to the event that night!" Edan screamed "OMG" and "This is crazy" all over social media, saying that he was lucky to be nominated for two movies. "Aside from grateful, I am still grateful. I never thought that I would get a Best New Performer nomination, not to mention for two movies. I feel I am really very very very very very lucky. I actually was able to run into such good scripts and characters at the start of this journey as an actor, running into so many veteran elders and filmmakers and everyone was very willing to share their experience with me, willing to open up and teach me. My life truly can't be any better." He humbly said that he still had a lot of room for improvement and places he needed to make better. In the future he would continue to work hard on his journey to become an actor and thank every person who voted for him.

The Emperor Motion Picture DETECTIVE VS. SLEUTHS (SUN TAM DAI JIN) along with WARRIORS OF FUTURE (MING YUT JIN GEI) and TABLE FOR SIX (FAN HEI GUNG SUM) each received 11 nominations. WARRIORS' producer Louis Koo Tin Lok said, "It's been hard on all of the cast and crew! this movie is a new attempt for Hong Kong film. As a science fiction film, the room for improvement could be enormous. The most important is a full bloom, I hope to bring more new elements for the audience to choose from."

At the press conference, Derek Yee Tung Sing said that last year due to the pandemic and the cinemas being closed for over 100 days, film productions were more chaotic. Thus this year only 33 films qualified. Louise Wong Dan Nei appeared in a flower petal shaped long dress and revealed that fortunately with William Chang Suk Ping's connect, she received the loan from designer Ryunosuke Okazaki. She said that when she announced the nominees her mind was a complete blank to ensure that she did not make any reading mistake. "The nomination list has many movies and actors I like, I applauded hard for them. This year the competition would be very strong, I believe it would be very intense."

Malaysian goddess Lin Minchen and Ivana Wong Yuen Chi were both nominated with TABLE FOR SIX for Best Supporting Actress. Lin Minchen said that when she learned that the movie had numerous nominations she was already jumping like mad, but not until her co-star Louis Cheung Kai Chung congratulated her did she knew she was a part of them. "I was stunned for a very long time, then I screamed as I called my family. My family screamed along with me on vide chat. I am really very honored to be nominated along with such excellent actors." Wong Yuen Chi joked that all the memories were back. "I wish I would be able to go on the stage with Minchen! Haha!" One of their opponents Jennifer Yu Heung Ying was also very happy. "I would continue to work hard and create even more characters that everyone likes. This is the greatest dream as an actor. Many people say that this time was a great breakthrough for me, very different from my previous acting. The turning point of my life was also when the film was shot."

As for Wong Yuen Chi's on screen boyfriend Peter Chan Charm Man, who would battle THE SPARRING PARTNER's Jan Lamb Hoi Fung and others for Best Supporting Actor. Chan Charm Man thanked the voters, the film team and his manager. "Especially my family, they are my greatest motivation." Lam Hoi Fung already conceded defeat, as he humorously said, "I have a lot of confidence, in a loss!"
